When i was 12 or so i had an old pair of roller skates. The type that you had to strap on to your shoes. They were adjustable so that as your feet grew you could adapt them to fit. But of course they would always work loose and make life difficult. Its a far cry from todays solid boots.
But at least i managed to get the hang of it. Do you remember the Roller Disco’s of the 80’s. Most of the time was spent in the bar or avoiding the professionals on the rink. I had always liked the idea of inline skates and was delighted to fine thay in Munich all sorts of people of all ages went inline skating through the many cycle tracks in the local area. I was even more impressed to discover Blade Night.

Blade Night happens every Monday in Munich from May until September. Basically they shut down a route through the city every Monday night from 2030 untill 11:00 at the latest. They had 4 routes when i was there and eventually i managed to persuade the kids they wanted to do it ;-). Sadly we only managed 2 nights with the weather and everything else but it was great fun. The first night we did it the weather was wonderful. Really hot and dry. This brought a lot of people out and they recorded over 30,000 people. The normal crowd is more likely to be 20,000. Heres a pic taken by one of the officials. They would publish some every week and amazingly we were lucky enough to be on the website on our first time. Im here with my eldest daughter and my son on 19/8/2002.
All the preparation was carried out on the afternoon. A local radiostation would provide music and several Breweries would provide bars 😉 Yes alcohol was freeley available and they even sold plastic drink holders adapted to hang off your belt 😉 In the pic we are being given free baseball caps from the Nokia girls.
